About Saligrama

Saligrama is a small town located in Udupi District of Karnataka State. It is located just in the middle of Udupi and Kundapura and is about 21 KM away from Udupi in its north. This small is famous for its religious shrines and beautiful sea shore. The overall administration of this town is looked after by the Nagar Panchayat. The best time to visit Saligrama is during winter months.  During summers, temperature rises up to 350C and during winter the average temperature becomes 200C.

History of Saligrama

The name of this town has been derived from the sacred Saligrama Stone that is worshipped as Lord Vishnu by the Vaishnava Hindus. Hindus who consider Lord Guru Narshima as the main deity of their community consider Saligrama as the most sacred place for their community. Most of the people residing in Saligrama Town are Kota Brahmins.

Guru Narashima and Hanuman Temple

These two temples date back to many centuries ago. Guru Narshima is the main deity of Kota Brahmins. Every year thousands of devotees attend the annual car festival organized at this temple.

This park is constructed in the memory of Ramakrishna Paramhansa and his disciple Swami Vivekananda. T his park has a place for meditation and a book store. Sri Durga Parameshwari Temple

This is one of the most ancient temples of Devi Durga. Here Devi Maa is worshipped are Durgaparameshwari , a goddess of strength. Hindu Devotees from all over India come here to worship Devi Maa and seek her blessings. On the occasion Dhekkebali Seva and Navarathri, special pujas are performed at this temple.

This temple located at Parampalli is more than 8 centuries old and is popular pilgrimage place for the Hindus from India and outside.
